Arizona

Not all of the quilts hung during The Art of Quilting show at the Gilbert Museum were vintage.
Arizona by well known fiber artist
Susan Vassallo
is a stunning example of modern talent here in the Valley of the Sun.

Susan donated Arizona as a gift to the museum.
The note on the quilt states "She had been a participant in the museums annual quilt shows for several years. When she moved from the area, she felt this piece was an appropriate gift as a token of her support of the museums mission."

Susan developed a method called Paintlique, which is a form of appliqueing painted images onto art quilts.

Amazing attention to detail.
What a treasure to see this quilt up close.

Completed 2011
Machine Pieced and Machine Quilted

Susan's work represents so accurately the feeling and history of the South West.

You can see why so many of Susan's quilts have been featured in magazines and books.
Recently an exhibit of her work was held at the Russell Rotunda Senate Building in Washington D.C. and she will be a guest teacher this fall at International Quilt Festival, Houston.

In appreciation of her generous gift, there will always be a little bit of Susan found in the halls of the Gilbert Museum here in Arizona.
