I've organized baskets into colors, separating the yardage from the scraps.
What takes up a lot of room are the scraps.
You know, those little pieces usually smaller than a fat quarter, or WOF but only a few inches wide.
I've donated 3 large bags to my local quilt guild, but there appears to be as much fabric as I started out with.
hmmmm....
I am determined not to move all this again, so my goal for 2012 is to use what I have.
One of the best sources I have found for scrap quilt patterns is Bonnie Hunter of Quiltsville.
I've just started working on her free pattern Scrappy Trip Around The World.
My fabric preferences have really changed.
At the price of fabric this is a great way to use up those old colors too precious to toss or give away.
Bonnie's pattern calls for 2 1/2" strips, but I decided to make mine smaller.
I've been cutting up my scraps into 2" strips.
Lots and lots of 2" strips.
(I have another quilt in mind that I will also be using these for, but more about that later)
This is the first time I have made a Trip Around The World quilt.
A very old and traditional pattern.
Bonnie gives great step by step instructions over on her web site.
I liked Bonnie's version because there is no need to match fabrics at any level
First you start by sewing (6) 2" strips together, and then sew them into a tube.
The colors can be very random, but it's a good idea to alternate lights with darks.
Sub cut into (6) 2" sections.
Unpick the rows alternating at each colored square.
Sew sections together to make a 9" block.
I've tossed each block up on the design wall in no particular order.
These will be re-arranged once all the blocks are completed.
Already a fun pattern is beginning to emerge.
This is one of those quilts where a scrappy block can be made from time to time in between other quilt projects.
I'll keep you posted on my progress.

Love it Nedra! This reminds me of the project I did years ago with all the leftovers from sewing for my daughter and turned it into the 9-patch that I gave her for her bridal shower gift! Good to use up all those scraps for something beautiful and useful...just like our fore-mothers did!

Aren't Bonnie's patterns the best? I'm working on a Many Trips quilt too using my enormous stash of western fabrics. Mine will be king-sized, but I'm not seeing a reduction in my collection. How does that happen? I love how your blocks are coming together. It's going to be wonderful!

Very, very nice! I love playing with colors when I knit and crochet, too. I do the same as you: I throw different colors into baskets and boxes to get idea about how to use them together. Such fun, isn't it! The whole process is so much fun. People who think they would get bored quilting, knitting, crocheting have no idea how much fun we have. ;)

I have a ton of scraps to use too plus others and I swear I will not buy fabric this coming year - I have to use what I have. The only thing I really need in the upcoming year most likely is batting, I do believe I have enough for backgrounds and backings.

Love it. I took a class in the 1990s and have a Christmas one I put out each year. I've also used flannel for a baby quilt. Love scrappy!!!
It's gorgeous Nedra. I have been meaning to do one of these...your so right about the scraps!
Maybe next year is the year to use up lots of scraps..

It's looking fabulous, I love the idea of using up all of those scraps and I've made a New Year resolution to not start any new projects, just finish up my UFO's. Now I think another resolution will be to use up all of my scraps!!
That one is so on my list, I was going to make it at a retreat but ended up not going so it didn't happen. Yours makes me want it again. it looks fabulous.
