MOO-ston Cow Quilt Exhibit

The Exhibit that made me laugh
the most at IQF/Houston
was
MOO-ston
a Cow Parade of Quilts.
 Friends and students of
Mary Lou Weidman
created
"Bovine-Inspired" themes
of her Purple Cow pattern.
Each one was unique and hilarious.
Who would have thought you could dress up
a cow in so many ways?
 BOO-MOO
by Molly Evangelisti
captured Halloween
 Right down to the
witchy shoes
 pumpkin cow udders
and spider webs
 The Purple Cow pattern
is found in the book
by Mary Lou Weidman and Melanie McFarland
This was the kind of exhibit
where the viewers were
allowed to be noisy.
There were rows upon rows of
Whimsical Cows
Bovine Intervention....Cow Pie
they all brought a chuckle.
 Moody Blues
by Laurie Latta
 My personal favorite
COWmen Miranda
by Sue Cresse
With a flamboyant
tutti-frutti hat
 and jeweled leggings.
I almost had to hold myself
back from dancing samba in the aisles.
Mary Lou even recreated
a version of Purple Cow.
MOOdern
brings us right up to current day trends
What will they think of next?

More from Kaffe Fassett Exhibit

 There were TV crews filming
 the Kaffe Fassett Exhibit
at IQF/ Houston
I did not want to get in their way,
so I gently stepped around quickly
and only took a few pictures of his wonderful quilts.
Square In A Square
by Kaffe Fassett and Pauline Smith
Quilted by Pauline Smith
Do you wonder where Kaffe finds his inspiration?
"A tile wall in Baja, California had blue and white tiles that
had been primitively painted so that there was a lot
of variation in their square-in-a-square design.
A range of dusty toned Shot Cottons are featured."
 Kaffe's
Shot Cottons by Rowan
provide an interesting glance.
The weft is woven with one color
and the warp is woven in a slightly different color.
Together they impart a unique sheen to the fabric.
*note: Shot Cottons are loosely woven
and hand dyed
with subtle deformities
but I think this gives personality to the fabric.
 Korean Log Cabin
I was surprised to see works done in
a pastel color theme,
a small break away from his traditional jewel tones.
"On a trip to South Korea,
Kaffe was struck by the soft colors of wrapping cloths
which resemble Log Cabin Quilts."
 Striped Baskets
"The diagonal random placement of the
Woven Stripes
adds a delicious vigor to this quilt.
The pattern is traditional but made
contemporary by this
choice of fabrics."
I wish there had been more time
to go back again and again to this Exhibit
because the up close views
were so much more than
can be captured in a picture.
And I wish I had the time to make every single one.

Kaffe Fassett Exhibit

 One of my most
favorite favorite favorite
parts of the
International Quilt Show
in Houston
was viewing the
Kaffe Fassett Exhibit
I'm not sure how many of his quilts were on display,
(rows and rows)
but it's the most I've ever seen in one place.
And yes, it was my
happy place!
His use of color with fabrics
captivates and entrances
 Rosita
Notes from the Exhibit:
"The great Missoni family in Italy have the
zig zag as their signature motif in their
stunning machine-made knit wear.
In the 1970's Kaffe worked closely in Milan
with Tai and Rosita Missoni.
This quilt is a homage and named in honor
of Rosita."
 The Exhibit
Where Have All The Flowers Gone
was sponsored by Rowan for Westminster Lifestyle Fabrics
 Inspiration came from Kaffe's
book
with Liza Prior Lucy
whom he has worked with for 20 years.
As an artist, Kaffe gives the idea with color and fabrics
and then Liza translates into quilts.
Kaffe and Liza often take traditional quilt designs
and then translate them with stunning
stripes and shot cottons from Kaffe's fabric lines.
Kaffe commented that he "Goes after color every time."
Kaffe:  "One simple diamond
repeated and repeated"
 On Point Handkerchief Corners
made with Woven Stripes
Alex Anderson with
did a wonderful interview with Kaffe
during the Exhibit
that can be viewed
on The Daily Blog

Rahna Summerlin Quilts

Last August I took a picture
at the IQF Long Beach Quilt Show
of  Rahna Summerlin's
Blooming In Chintz
see post on 8/12/13
I love her style and designs!
While in Houston
Rahna and her husband approached me
and thanked me for featuring one of her quilts
on my blog.
During our conversation I learned Rahna has two quilts
here at International Quilt Festival!
Of course, I had to run right down
as soon as I could
and check them out.
A very talented lady!
 Fish Scraps
 Rahna wrote:
"There are ten variations of fish on this quilt
all foundation pieced, all original.
I was inspired by two large boxes
of fabric samples given to me by an acquaintance
in the surf wear industry.
Almost all of the fabric on the front and back
are from these ready-to-wear
fabric samples and remnants.
Approximately 220 hours went into the making
of this quilt"
 Great use of scraps.
There were a lot of people
standing nearby
oohing and aaahing over Fish Scraps.
 Last Summer's Leftovers
 Rahna wrote:
"I fell in love with an antique Railroad Crossing
quilt I saw in Sharon Newman's book
Treasures From Yesterday, Book 2
I made this quilt with lots of leftover triangles
from a prior quilt I had made the year before.
I am constantly inspired by antique quilts and am
infatuated with scrap quilts from the early
to mid 1900's.

Letter Carriers Quilt

I had a few moments yesterday to walk
the Quilt Show part
of Quilt Festival here in Houston.
Sooo many fabulous quilts.
I took A LOT of pictures
and will share with you as I have time.
One of my most favorites was
Letter Carriers
by Janet Stone
Overland Park, Kansas
 1st Place Ribbon
in Mixed Techniques Category
So many beautiful and exactly crafted techniques
were used in this quilt.
 Janet wrote:
"A love of basket blocks sparked the idea
to try to create some by weaving bias tape strips.
An additional 26 pieced Basket blocks in the border
are embellished with
26 letter beads.
Prairie Points, hand covered buttons, and
half-Penny circle edging are just a few of
the highlights."
Janet Stone is also the designer of
the Block of The Month quilt this next year
for
The
Quilt Show
with Alex Anderson and Ricky Timms
