There is an art in
making something old
new again.
Pat Roche found this vintage quilt as a top,
and then as a long arm quilter
worked her magic.
Intricate quilting designs have brought this piece back to life again.
Pat shared with us at the last Phoenix Modern Quilt Guild meeting
the process she goes through in choosing a design
as she mixes old with the new.
We are doing a little trading of skills, and I brought her quilt home and have sewn the binding on.
It's been delightful to be able to look at Pat's quilt up close and to view her stunning work.
Because of the compactness in stitching, the quilt is a little stiff right now, but I know it will soften up comfortably once it's washed and dried.
I have pondered what the maker would think of her quilt
as it has moved from her time period into our world with
long arm details.
A few stains and discoloration from age are visible here and there.
Pat even did a little patching in spots that were thread bare.
All is beautiful now, and this quilt will continue on as the heirloom it was intended to be.

wow! That is a fantastic quilt. The design is fairly simple but the machine quilting is some of the best I've ever seen. Ever. That is one amazing quilt. I envy you seeing it in person.
very beautiful - do you know if a quilt that is heavily quilted does it usually soften up when it is washed and doesn't feel stiff? I have never really felt one that was heavily quilted so don't know.
You are so right - this is a beautiful combination of mixing old and new. Thank you so much for sharing it with your readers! I think I want to make that block now!
Gorgeous. Love the pattern and the quilting is stunning. Obviously the quilt top was in terrific shape to work with.
Wow - that's really very cool. I love her motifs.
Wow!!! That is beautiful. Perfect combo of old and new. I need to come a long way before I feel comfortable quilting my great grandmother's top my grandma gave me recently. But this inspiring.
I'm sure the original artist would be happy and amazed at what resources we have today. This is a beautiful mix of old and new.
This is fabulous, Nedra. I really wish I could get to be a better machine quilter. Pat's work is amazing!
Such a beautiful quilt. It tugs at my heart knowing that the top belonged to someone in days gone by. It is gorgeous!! Binding is such a favorite process of mine. Trish
