We have our first grand daughter due in November and I wanted to make an heirloom dress for this sweet little girl who will soon be joining our family.
I haven't sewn a dress in at least 20 years and I was a little apprehensive about making this one.
I picked a very basic pattern, McCalls M4865 with a simple yoke and sleeve.
It was so easy to construct this dress and it turned out looking like something out of an expensive boutique. I credit the result to Texture Magic that can make everything look like you've spent hours, when in reality, the process was fast.
I put Texture Magic on the yoke of the dress. Doesn't it look like I spent hours smocking?
I stitched the Texture Magic to the back of a piece of silk with 1/4" grids, and then applied steam.
Within seconds the fabric began to shrink, giving it that wonderful textured look.
I then cut out the yoke pieces,
and hand stitched some white beads in the folds.
I also used Texture Magic on the sleeve bands to add some pretty.
I made this dress in one day. It was that easy.

It is so pretty. We will bless and seal our new little baby girl in about 6 weeks so I've been looking at lots of blessing dresses lately. I've thought about making one...... we'll see. I love the way yours turned out!

It is breathtaking. The bands around the arm are a fabulous touch. I'd have never thought of that. It really is perfect. Why would anyone ever smock!??? if you can use texture magic!

That dress is so sweet it makes me tear up remembering my own grandbabies when they were born. They are now 8, 6 and 4 and being a grandma is the best thing ever! The dress is perfect...love it.

Nedra, the little dress turned out beautiful. It does look like smocking, that's what sold it to one shop. She is going to so cute in it.

I saw this dress in person and it is even lovelier than the camera can show. It is truly beautiful. Having smocked all my girls their blessing dresses, I can say that this is every bit as charming as a hand smocked dress.

I think the gown is beautiful. One question tho, is the bodice stiff at all? I've seen a few projects with TM that were on the stiff side. I realize you used silk rather than cotton so I was just curious if it was stiff at all.

No, TM does not go brittle or stiff as long as you don't lay the iron on the fabric. Hold it about an inch above as you let the steam do the work.
