Tiled Blooms Quilt Block

For the latest Bees Knees Quilting Bee block
I made
Tiled Blooms
for Sinta Borland (Pink Pincushion)
Sinta made this so easy for us.
She mailed most of the sections Pre-cut.
All we had to do was
cut the petals,
iron on fusible
sew applique
and then
assemble the block.
This is what Tiled Blooms will look like once it's all put together.

Shari's Maple Block

 Shari Butler
is the host this month
for our Bees Knees Quilting Bee
Shari is having us make
a large 12" X 12" Modern Maples block
Shari really made it easy for us.
She cut out each piece,
and mailed us the fabrics.
The block sewed up quick,
and is now ready to be mailed back to her :)

Scrappy Crossroads Block

 I've been taking a little
Blog Nap
the last few days :)
But, you can always catch me on
Instagram under "nedrasorensen"
if you want to see the latest.
I have been working on various quilt projects.
My latest start (notice I didn't say finish)
is a 16- inch
Scrappy Crossroads Block
Free Tutorial by my friend
Lori Holt of Bee In My Bonnet

I'm always looking for ways to use up my scraps
and this was a perfect project
to cut up little bits of left overs
into 2 1/2" X 2 1/2" squares
This is a good time of year to cut up and organize
my scrap bins.
Although, I've barely made a dent :)
For the background fabric
I'm using
Dark Turquoise
by
American Made Brand Cotton Solids
This is my first time to purchase this fabric line
and I'm in love!
It has a high thread count, and is solid to the touch.
50 colors available (I want them all!)
and you can't beat the price at $6.99 a yard.
100% US Grown Premium Upland Cotton
I purchased mine at
where they  have a good variety of colors.
Jeff told me the other day they have 22 more colors
arriving soon.
Yay!

A Few More from Quilters of The White Mountain

 People normally think of
July in the Phoenix Metro as just hot, hot, hot.
It is that.
But, it's also Monsoon season.
July is the wettest month of our year, where we often receive daily storms
filled with high winds, dust and rain.
It's still very hot, but our normally arid climate
becomes quite humid.
It takes some getting used to.
The lucky ones leave town,
usually seeking higher elevations.
Within a few hours drive,
many families own cabins or 2nd homes in the Show Low/ Lakeside area.
At 6,300 feet,
this resort town sits in the White Mountain range
and is quite pleasant during the summer.
Here are a few more of my
favorite quilts from the
Quilters of the White Mountain Show
 Notorious Too
by Joyce Buchberger
Quilted by Diane Pitchford
 A great scrappy Americana quilt
perfect for July
 I really like
the secondary pattern
that forms in the center of each block.
The Convention Center had big issues with their lighting
and most of these quilts hung in very dark booths.
The flash on my camera helped a little with the up close shots
but these far away pictures really do not give justice to these quilts.
 Steps To The Alter
by Barbara Behrens
I'm really drawn to scrappy quilts
that help us use up what we have.
 Scraps Too Small To Use
by Joyce Buchberger
 Pineapple blocks
with low volume backgrounds
It's hard to tell from the full length picture
(sorry, bad lighting again :(
but this up close shot shows how
Joyce used white background blocks in the middle of the quilt
and then moved with neutral/tans around the outer edges.
She really gave me some ideas of how to use up
both types of scraps in my stash.

Love those Kaffes!

X & + Quilt Block

 Fellow Bees Knees member
April Rosenthal
sent out fabrics a few months ago to make her a
X & + quilt block.
But, the label on my envelope came off
and the package was returned back to April.
She recently resent, and
I received my package in the mail this weekend.
I hurried and put her block together.
I have been wanting to make this block for
several years now
and being a Bees Knees member
gave me the opportunity to finally give it a try.
So easy and fun to make.
A great way to use up scraps
and the block works up fast.
These are the fabrics April sent
from her very own fabric line!

Michael Miller Challenge Fabric

 As a member of the
Phoenix Modern Quilt Guild
we are joining along with the
Modern Quilt Guild
for the Michael Miller Fabric Challenge
As part of this challenge we each received a
Fat Eighth of 6 pieces
of
Petal Pinwheels
The challenge is to make anything, as long as it's quilted.
The Prize:
3 winners will receive each month for a year
a "goody box" filled with fabrics from their
newest collections.
Sign me up!
Yesterday we drove from Arizona to California
and I worked on the beginnings of my design.
English Paper Piecing Coffin shapes
(yes you read that right: Coffin shapes)
It's so wonderful to come home.
My favorite part of the drive is
Pacheco Pass with all of the fruit stands.
We loaded up with freshly picked
cherries
apricots
and
pistachio nuts.
Seeing all this fruits beautifully displayed
made me think how grateful I am
to have color
in so many shapes and sizes.

Nine By Five Quilt

It's always fun to see what others are sewing
during our
Open Sew Day
Vicky was working on
Nine By Five
from a class taught
by Pat Graco
Piano Key border will be coming
A great way to use up scraps!
And I love the color pallet Vicky chose.
The black really ties in all of those brights
 Betty was also working on
a Nine By Five quilt
using a darker color pallet.
I think the ladies said they made
100 of these small
9 Patch units :)

Nine By Five
was taught in Pat Graco's
Scraps Are Us
class.
*I believe this is an original pattern designed by Pat

Danny's Heart Quilt

 Sooo much inspiration
coming from the
Phoenix Modern Quilt Guild on Saturday.
Danny Heyen (Mommy For Reals)
brought her finished
King Sized
Heart Quilt
 300 Fabrics :)
Fussy cut hearts
Sewn in Pieced Sections
Lots of partial seams
Danny graphed the quilt out first before construction.
4 inch, 6 inch, 8 inch and 12 inch blocks
Notice there is a Dark and Light Contrast
Some of the hearts are light with dark backgrounds
and other hearts are
dark with light backgrounds.
And equally impressive is the fact that Danny just
gave birth to a second daughter just a few months ago.
These young moms, with their busy schedules
continue to lead, especially in the Modern Quilting World.
 Danny also brought
her Maple Leaf Quilt for Show and Tell
In December our PMQG hosted a
Low Volume/ Text Print Exchange
A great way to gather backgrounds
for a scrappy quilt.
One of the things I love about Modern Quilting
is that they often take a Traditional Design
and bring it back to life with upscaled size and prints.
Beautifully done, Danny!

Phoenix Modern Quilt Guild/ March Meeting

For our March Meeting with the
Phoenix Modern Quilt Guild
we enjoyed a
"Sew In"
Everyone brought their machines
and it was very interesting (and fun!) to see
what members of our group were working on.
Sue Hayman
was making the very popular
Swoon Mini-blocks
by Camille Roskelley of Thimble Blossoms
Love the color pallet and fabrics Sue is working with!
Sue also brought a purse she recently finished.
 The back design
 Tracy was also making blocks
that she renamed
"Swoonish"
 Tracy modified
 the original Swoon block
to create a less waste
and quicker to sew method
Notice Tracy's blocks have a pinwheel center:)
Tracy was also making a Butterfly quilt
for a soon to be born grand daughter.
Tiny 4 1/2 inch blocks made from a 5 inch Charm Pack.
 Kirsten has been busy sewing
a design also by Camille of Thimble Blossoms
Fabric line:
Voile by Anna Marie Horner
The Phoenix Modern Quilt Guild recently purchased
a large portable design wall for us to use
as a display for our projects.
Very nice!
And I continued to work on
pattern by Jodi Nelson (Pleasant Home)
All 16 blocks are now complete!
Tomorrow I will share with you more happenings
from our Phoenix Modern ladies.
