Top Soccer Shoot Out Ever

Mr. Cactus received two degrees from Brigham Young University.
That is one reason I love to watch
Our Son-In-Law was a top Soccer player.
Now our Grandchildren, even at their young ages, are playing soccer too.
Top Soccer Shoot Out Ever

Make sure to especially watch the very last play.

Things Quilters Really Think

 When we were visiting
in Lakeside, Arizona
they had this fun wall hanging
Things Quilters Really Think
hanging on the door
 It had me pondering
What do Quilters Really think?
I suspect our thought process comes from a unique perspective.
(*Panel's are available for purchase at the store.
You provide your own setting.)
You know, this really is true statement for me :)
 I agree!
Now that you mention it....
Refer back to the first picture for more amusing ideas.

Inter-pre-nating Quilts

The other day I was sitting around a table
with a group of friends
and one of them said, describing another
"She is really good at Interprenating quilts"
My friend laughed at her own faux pas
stating "I don't think that is a real word."
but we all knew immediately what she meant.
Do you?
The reason she might have wondered if
Interprenating
is a real word
comes from our experience of constantly learning new
Quilt Lingo
Sometimes it can make your head spin.
I can remember the setting and where I was
when I first learned the meaning of the words
Stipple
Wonkey
and
Fussy Cut
In Linguistics, new words are regularly being formed
all the time, and as quilters
we like keep up with current trends.
A Portmanteau word or Blend Word
is formed by merging the sounds and meanings
of two or more words.
Think:
Sharknado (Shark +Tornado)
Infomercial (Information + Commercial)
Brangelina (Brad Pitt + Angelina Jolie)
So if you are good at
Interpreting quilts and Communicating pattern design
you just might be an
Interprenator!
So, I ask you, is Inter-pre-nating a real word?
If used often enough, it can become one!
(Although I might have to run this idea past our daughter Elizabeth
who has a degree in Linguistics)
But for now,
I think I need to get busy and start
interprenating a few more quilts.

The Sewing Machine Song

Betty Hutton 1947
from the movie The Perils of Pauline
The Sewing Machine Song
Too funny!
It certainly made me wonder
how many lives would
"come to a no good end"
if it wasn't for our sewing machines.
I can only speak personally,
but I am well aware
my machine has provided years of
calming therapy :)
*Wouldn't this song be fun to sing at Quilt Retreats?
Ohhh the sewing machine, the sewing machine
A girl's best friend
If I didn't have my sewing machine
I'd a come to no good end
But a bobbin a bobbin and peddle a peddle
And wheel the wheel by day
So by night I feel so weary that I never get out to play

Ohhh the sewing machine, the sewing machine
A friend in need
If I didn't having my sewing machine
A wicked life I'd lead
But a bobbin a bobbin and peddle a peddle
And dream about romance
So by night I feel so weary that I never get out to dance

Ohhh the sewing machine, the sewing machine
Me pride and joy
If I didn't having me sewing machine
I'd a married James McCoy
But a bobbin a bobbin and peddle a peddle
And that's the end of Jim
'Cause by night I get so weary I don't even look good to him

Cow Stampede Quilts

 Quilts can be quite humorous.
I heard some
deep hearty belly laughs
through out the aisles
while viewing the
Cow Stampede Exhibit
Looking at Cows From A New Perspective
during AQS/Phoenix Quilt Week
**
This special exhibit is a hilarious
and very creative interpretation
of anything "cow"
Using the whimsical cow block from Mary Lou Weisman's book
Out of The Box with Easy Blocks
Mary's students have been
original
 clever
and offer a great play on words.
I saw a similar exhibit at Quilt Festival in Houston
and AQS provided even more ideas.
This post is a quite picture heavy,
but I wanted to share with you every funny inch:
COWafornia
by Sue Cresse
 MOOlah A Cash Cow
or
COWculator
by Charlotte Lorenzo
Notice the numbers on the cow's body
 and the udders!
 Eat More Veggies
by Kathy Collins
 Carrot udders :)
 Cow Tipping
by Terri Jones
made me think of the movie "Cars"
 PanaMOO Canal
by Susan Typpi
 complete with 3-D
parrot earrings
 Cow Town
by Mary Lou Weidman herself
 Neighborhood houses with names like
Bessie
Bossy
and Lulu
 Hot Dog udders :)
 Zorro the BOOvine
by Eilene Hamilton
Who is that masked man cow?
 Captain
AMOOica
by Julie Post
 Caped and Flying
 MOO-rage
by Rebecka Schafer
 Sunglasses with a desert view
 The Three COWballeros
by Jane Tenorio-Coscarelli
 Who would not love
a three headed
mustached cow?
Especially one adorned with a bird
wrapped in a Serape?
I seriously have to come up with an idea
and make one of these some day!
The basic cow block can be found
in the book
Out Of The Box with Easy Blocks

Quilting By Osmosis

My mother used to tease me and
suggest that
"if I put a book on my head
maybe
I would  learn by *Osmosis"
*Osmosis: unconscious assimilation
I'm wondering if the same process
might work with quilting?
**
Do you think there is a possibility that
all of those
"WIP's"
(Works in Progress)
or
the hundreds of quilt ideas
floating in my head
would magically
get done if
I put a sewing machine on my head?
"Quilting By Osmosis"?
Might be worth a try.

Live Christmas Trees

Did you have a nice Christmas?
Ours was wonderful!
After a nice dinner on Christmas Eve
 we gathered
everyone together in the family room
for a program.
We talked about the Savior and discussed the
celebration of His birth.
From stories to music
we were reminded of the
True Meaning of Christmas
For our Grand Finale we ended with a
family game
that provided new visuals to the words
Live Christmas Trees
 Our youngest son Paul
who flew in from
Salt Lake City to join us for the week,
kindly allowed us to use him as
Tree #1
 Our daughter's boyfriend Kevin
was also a good sport
and let us use him as
Tree #2
The original idea for this game came from Spoonful
Divide the group into two teams,
and give each a supply box full of
crepe paper
aluminum foil
ornaments
 ribbon
and other "trimmings"
The contest is to see which team
can decorate THE BEST
Christmas Tree
One of the great things about this activity is that
you can involve all age groups.
The grand kids had as much fun as the adults.
We were a lot more random
and not as tidy
 in our decorating as
the Spoonful model's example...
but the hysterical laughter
that increased in volume
with each bow and bell
made our hasty attempts
well worth the effort.
 Kevin couldn't move
after being draped in a string of blinking lights
that were plugged into the wall.
Long glass icicle ornaments
were even hung from Paul's ears
 If you were judge,
who would you pick as the best
Live Christmas Tree?
 It must have been the
impressive
Aluminum foil Star Crown
or the hand written signs
because Paul took the prize.
We had so much fun we think
we need to make this activity an
Annual Christmas Event in our family
Next year: stay tuned
Bigger and better decoration choices will be coming our way.

Disneyland Humor

 Some days
are happiest when started with a
Smile :)
Because a trip to Southern California
is not on today's agenda,
Disneyland Humor
is a good second best.
 If Mr. Cactus
had an ECG
there is a good possibility
this might show up.
And this would be me :)

MOO-ston Cow Quilt Exhibit

The Exhibit that made me laugh
the most at IQF/Houston
was
MOO-ston
a Cow Parade of Quilts.
 Friends and students of
Mary Lou Weidman
created
"Bovine-Inspired" themes
of her Purple Cow pattern.
Each one was unique and hilarious.
Who would have thought you could dress up
a cow in so many ways?
 BOO-MOO
by Molly Evangelisti
captured Halloween
 Right down to the
witchy shoes
 pumpkin cow udders
and spider webs
 The Purple Cow pattern
is found in the book
by Mary Lou Weidman and Melanie McFarland
This was the kind of exhibit
where the viewers were
allowed to be noisy.
There were rows upon rows of
Whimsical Cows
Bovine Intervention....Cow Pie
they all brought a chuckle.
 Moody Blues
by Laurie Latta
 My personal favorite
COWmen Miranda
by Sue Cresse
With a flamboyant
tutti-frutti hat
 and jeweled leggings.
I almost had to hold myself
back from dancing samba in the aisles.
Mary Lou even recreated
a version of Purple Cow.
MOOdern
brings us right up to current day trends
What will they think of next?
