Wild Thing Quilt

In February 2011 I finished piecing
Wild Thing
a quilt for my grand daughter.
And then with the move, the quilt top
was put away in a box.
Out of sight,
out of mind.
With my grand daughter's 3rd birthday
fast approaching,
I did some hunting through boxes
and found the top.
Pat Roche kindly helped me out
and did the machine quilting in just a few days.
I love the swirls she added,
which really make this
quilt pop.
This was such a fun quilt to work on.
I even crocheted my own ric rac by following a
I'm am a beginning crocheter, and the ric rac was easy to do.
I think it adds a nice handmade touch
from grandmother
for a sweet grand daughter:)

Owls are so popular right now, and these colors will
match my grand daughter's bedroom
perfectly.
I continued the border fabric on the back and
also used it for the binding.

Happy Birthday Kayla!

Pat's Flag Quilt

It's always an honor to see
Pat Roche's
machine quilting
up close.

Her
Flag Quilt
is one of my favorites.
And perfect to show you
in honor of Vetran's Day.

A lot of
ooohing and ahhing
from members of
The Phoenix Modern Quilt Guild
I was able to bring this beauty home
and finish it up by sewing on the binding.

I believe Pat said that this motif is
one she designed personally.
Fabulous!
The center red sections are filled with sunbursts and swirls.
A little bit easier to see on the back
I placed the quilt on the pool table to gain a perspetive of the overall size.
Pat's interpretation and machine quilting really make this quilt.
You can see why she is an award winning quilter.
Beautifully done!

Row Along/ Row 6 Mugs

 of the
Row Along
with
Bee In My Bonnet
is now available.
Lori has designed a
comfy Mug
that looks almost ready
to be filled
with hot cocoa.

My heart goes out to many of you who are suffering
through the cold and stormy weather
taking place in the United States
right now.
You would appreciate the warmth these mugs bring.
Ironically,
and even though it's almost
Thanksgiving,
here in my part of Arizona,
our temps have been in the
80's and we
still have our airconditioner on.
But, I will pull the mugs out soon, because once it drops
below 70 degrees,
Arizonians
bundle up in
heavy coats and sweaters,
and shiver as if we lived
next door to Alaska.
Looked a little comical when I first moved here.
Then my blood thinned,
and I now
understand!
Back to the Row Along:
This pattern is very easy to put together and
sews up quickly.
For the background, I continued
to go scrappy
and to use up what I have
in my stash.
The only hard decision was to narrow down the fabric selection
to 9 fabrics.
I loved how each one turned out, and could have continued making these by the dozens.
This row made me think of the mug collection
my mother had on our kitchen wall
when I was a child.
And Row 6  looks happy
laying next to
Rows 1-5
Now  I need to be patient for 2 more weeks
to see what
wonderful creation
Lori will reveal
for Row 7!

Pat's Vintage Quilt

There is an art in
making something old
new again.
Pat Roche found this vintage quilt as a top,
and then as a long arm quilter
worked her magic.
Intricate quilting designs have brought this piece back to life again.
Pat shared with us at the last Phoenix Modern Quilt Guild meeting
the process she goes through in choosing a design
as she mixes old with the new.
We are doing a little trading of skills, and I brought her quilt home and have sewn the binding on.
It's been delightful to be able to look at Pat's quilt up close and to view her stunning work.
Because of the compactness in stitching, the quilt is a little stiff right now, but I know it will soften up comfortably once it's washed and dried.
I have pondered what the maker would think of her quilt
as it has moved from her time period into our world with
long arm details.
A few stains and discoloration from age are visible here and there.
Pat even did a little patching in spots that were thread bare.
All is beautiful now, and this quilt will continue on as the heirloom it was intended to be.

Row Along/ Row 5

 I am so happy :)
I have now caught up with all of the rows that have been revealed so far with
Bee In My Bonnet's
Row 5 is a filler row of
Flying Geese
A total of 48 bright little flying geese
all stitched together,
 looking all ready to fly
South for the winter.
Lori offers a great tutorial on the
"Fast Flying Geese Method".
I had never tried this method before, and it was fun
to learn a new technique.
Lori used an Omnigrid Clear Marking Ruler to mark 1/4-inch lines
away from the center of the block.
Because I don't have the ruler, I improvised and used my
 Frixion pen.
After I stitched, the lines disappeared with the touch of an iron.
* if you want to see a little more about the pen
see Sept 3rd post

With Row 5 sitting next to the previous 4 rows, the quilt is really starting to take shape.
Lori announced we have some fun rows to look forward to:
flowers, spools, fall leaves, mugs, and  baskets
are coming next!
(along with some filler rows)
A new row will be revealed every 2 weeks.
It's never too late to join in on
The Row Along
