IQA 2009 Show Winners

I'm here in Houston, safe and (somewhat) sound.
Last night was the Awards Ceremony announcing the winners for 2009 IQA Annual Judged Show.

These quilts are the best of the best. Breathtaking is an understatement. I was happy to see Charlotte Warr Anderson, a Utahan as the President this year, hosting the event.
Below are a few snapshots I was able to take of some of the winning quilts.

I am a big Karen Stone fan. She won $5,000 for the Maywood Studio Master Award for Innovative Artistry.
One of the fun parts of the evening, was that each artist stood by their quilt as the audience mulled around, taking pictures and visiting.

Caryl Bryer Fallert won the Grand Prize. The Handi Quilter Best of Show Award, $10,000 for "On the Wings of a Dream". Rumor has it she took up dancing recently and you can see this picture is a self portrait.
Caryl use of Superior Threads really enhanced this quilt.

Hollis Chatelain created her quilt "Protection" using Superior Threads, also.
She won the Master Award for Thread Artistry.

"The Fernery" by Liz Jones winner of Mixed Technique Category.

Roses of Shenandoah by Rita Verroca for the Traditional Applique Category.

This was one of my favorites. I'm showing some close ups because each section caught my eye with various quilting techniques.
"Beyond The Dream, the Impossible Dream" by Jocelyne Leath won for Art-People, Portraits and Figures.

This part made me think of Southern Utah, although the setting is Australia.

For the Art Whimsical Category: "Once Upon A Christmas" by Sieglinde Schoen Smith.

Embellished Category: "Crazy About Ballet" by Linda Steele.

"Inner Beauty" by Cathleen Miller
Beautiful work!

I'm off to help set up this morning. I'll have more to share for tomorrow.
