The third quilt made by
Edith Shoppell
shown at the
Art Of Quilting Show
was a
Princess Feather Quilt
I love the simplicity
of the repeated image.
Completed in 1965
Hand appliqued
Hand Quilted
This design is an antique pattern
that surged in popularity after 1850.
The traditional colors are
red and green
with a muslin background.
But, there are many variations to this pattern.
Some have suggested the serrated edges
were inspired by the Amaranth plant,
which is sometimes known as
Princes' Feather or Princess Feather
Quilt Historian Barbara Brackman wrote a
very informative post
about
Feather Quilts
She commented
"The rules are pretty simple.
The arms have to rotate around the center."
One of my most favorite versions
with a modern twist is
by Kim McLean
Look at her stunning appliqued border!
What an amazing way to
take a traditional pattern
and dress it up so well.

love it - and wow that border - now I thought the feathers would take some work but look at the border and amount of work that went into that!
What a beautiful quilt! I can't even imagine appliqueing those little curves around every leaf!
