Pineapple Tidbits

Did you know that pineapple is symbolic of Hospitality and Friendship?
Thought to have originated in South America near Brazil, the first account came from Christopher Columbus.

Because of it's rareness and exotic nature, the pineapple became a symbol for the American Colonists. It became a custom to carve pineapple shapes into the columns at the entrance to a plantation. Often carved into wood or molded mortar on main gate posts, the pineapple represented "welcome".

Pineapple took upon many forms for the early Americans. They made pineapple shaped cakes, candies, gelatin molds, ceramic bowls, pitchers and even candelabras.

In the 1700-1800's home decor often had a pineapple symbol in the napkins, carpets, draperies and wallpaper. It was often painted into the backs of chairs and tops of chests.

Nutritionally pineapple helps break down protien. It's often used as a marinade to tenderize meat, and some claim it helps intestinal disorders.

If you've ever been to Hawaii, you know how wonderful pineapple is picked fresh from the fields.

This quilt is a Buggy Barn design called "Pineapple Tidbits" from the book Certifiably Crazy.
I've taught classes on the construction of this pattern, and it's one of my all time favorites.

Yummy looking quilt Nedra! My Buggy Barn Star class turned out really good. 17 people signed up and 10 of them came - they all went home with at least 1-2 blocks completed, and best of all I think I made some converts! LOL
