Mumbo Gumbo Class

Another class I taught at Bryce was Mumbo Gumbo.
This is such a fun quilt because you have an opportunity to use up some of your left over stash.
None of the fabrics need to match. Just grab what you have left over, and cut strips from 1 1/4" to 2".

This is the easy block. It's kind of like a half log cabin. The variation comes in the layout.

The students all caught on very quickly.

My girlfriend Judi was my room mate, and even signed up for my class. She really didn't need to take the class because she came back home with me for a few days, and I would have been happy to teach her individually. But, she liked being able to use the 3 hours to get started on the quilt.

Lots and lots of scraps cut into strips.

Helen Meck is making hers all out of polka dots.
Several of my friends have made this quilt with various "themed" fabrics. Verny made hers out of all Halloween scraps. Melissa made hers out of Kaffes.

In the classroom next door, Brenda Bailey was teaching "Slice and Dice".
I thought I'd show you some of the color variations from her students.

Don't you love seeing the same quilt made up in different fabrics? It's one of the joys of being a teacher.

Yes I love to see how different a quilt can be just by changing the fabric. Thanks for sharing this fun post!

Nedra,
I keep thinking that I would like to make Mumbo Jumbo- I like the pattern so much I bought the pattern twice LOL
Is there some tricks to making the mumbo jumbo pattern? Have you had any problems with the pattern or with the blocks working out correctly. She found her block sizes were not consistent - she is a good piecer with an accurate quarter inch seam so had not had that problem before.
The other pattern is very fun too- I do love how different fabric combinations can make the quilts seem like a completely different pattern. It is one of my favorite challenges of quilting. Sometimes what happens is that I can't make up my mind what color set to make that I end up making more than one version of the same pattern.LOL
Regards,
Anna

What a fun/whimsical quilt Mumbo Jumbo is! I've got enough strips, I could make a few!

I love seeing blocks in different colorways!!

Thanks for sharing more of the fun retreat!

I'm in love with the Mumbo Gumbo on the wall. I may just have to add this one to my future quilt list.

Fun fun. I loved my class by Brenda. It was so good to be with everyone. Verny makes me laugh with the halloweens.
