Especially because I had to go out yesterday and buy a new iron.
The THIRD one in the last year and a half.
They just don't make them like they used to.
I now buy "el cheapo's" so I won't become emotionally attached or require counseling when forced to dump them in the garbage can AGAIN.

I'm so with you on the irons Nedra...no more pricey ones for me...I buy the $19 Sunbeam at Bed, Bath and Beyond with a $5 coupon...the pricey ones don't seem to last any longer.
ReplyDeleteI've gone cheap, expensive, cheap, expensive...the cheap last longer but not nearly long enough. It's easier to throw them out though. I hope you have a back up sewing machine. I'd go through sewing withdrawals.
ReplyDeleteLast year I bought three new irons - one right after another it seems - I keep one in the sewing room, one in the laundry room and one in the camper - all of them are inexpensive - I tried pricier brands and they didn't last any longer than these do. When I see quilters post photos of the must have iron that is supposed to be the best and cost them around $400 or whatever I wonder why they bother?

I buy my irons at thrift stores and yard sales. I never pay more than $5 for them and usually in the range of $2-3. The older ones seem to last longer. I always keep on "in stock" on the shelf. That way when the one I'm using stops working, I just pull out the next one...then start looking for a back-up to keep on the shelf! :) The thrifted irons usually last about 5 years!

ReplyDeleteI agree with you. I no longer buy expensive irons, I find the cheapest one I can with a non-stick plate. They usually cost $10 to $12. Now if I drop them or they die, it's not a big deal. I just get another. Sometime simple and cheap is the best!

I a suspect all irons are manufactured in the same place nowadays so I dropped by Walmart for an inexpensive Hamilton Beach with this strange fake chrome/lift it off the ironing board attachment. There is a great switch that turns OFF "auto off" so that it will stay on while I am ironing a top or yardage. 1500 watts.
ReplyDeleteNedra, irons are a disposable unit for quilting...I go through 3-4 a year as well. I buy the cheaper Rowenta so I get a really good press and I can get them at Lowe's for $39.99. They work as well as the high end Rowenta's without the pricetag...

Oh...I so understand about the irons...I've been doing the same thing...trying more expensive ones and cheap ones. The last one my husband stopped to pick up for me...he bought it at Target and for just a few dollars got insurance on it...so if it breaks in the next 5 years I get a new one. I'm pretty sure it won't last 5 years based on my recent experience!
