Cactus Pincushions

The other day when I had the wool pulled out for the making of the pomanders, I wasn't ready to put it all away.

With a name like "Cactus Needle", I knew it was time to make a few more cactus pincushions.

The filler is kept together in a little muslin pouch, which is then inserted inside the wool exterior once it's been stitched 3/4ths of the way around.

What do you like to use for the inside of your pincushion? I like to use lizard litter. Yes, you read that right. "Desert Blend" is actually ground English walnut shells, and they make a nice solid interior, and sharpen your pins at the same time. Ground walnut shells are non-toxic, dust free, and less abrasive than sand.

I find my lizard litter at a local pet shop like Petco. I spent less than $10 for a 5 lb. bag, which will make A LOT of pincushions.

These must be Saguaro's in the spring, because they are in bloom.
I'm so happy! My girlfriend Judi (Live Well With Judi) arrived last night and will be staying until Tuesday.

This is just part of the stash she brought with her.
We plan on sewing our little hearts out.

That quilt on the front of the book is my next (in the future) project. Its paper pieced so should come out good.

Have a great time sewing your hearts out. I wish we could buy the shells here, I've only found little expensive bags at one quilt store. I love the pincushions, the wool is great for the needles too. Good combination.
